Treasurer’s Report
The current balance sheet standard as of January 24, 2008 is $6,399.11. Mary Guth will check into the process for banking with one bank rather the two we are currently using.
Conference
It was discussed that Grace Mims would be willing to do an ethics presentation. It was suggested that possibly Joyce from the Board of Counselor Examiners as well as several others would also present on regulations, ethics and additional information. Another suggestion was to ask a lawyer to present. Changing the date of the conference from October 31st to October 24th was discussed to allow more to attend due to the 66th annual AAMFT Conference which is being held at the same time – all agreed. It was also decided that postcards would be sent out as a marketing strategy and brochures sent in September. Ann Marie Rossing will check into the cost for labels and mailing. Larry Porter suggested also doing an email blast to notify potential attendees.
Dakota Care Presentation
Chad Roggow came to discuss Dakota Care services for LMFTs. He provided the board with terminology references for various health plans. He explained that employers set the rules for the design plans of which there are approximately 40–50 plans. A second handout explained exclusions. Exclusion numbers 28 and 29 were discussed. Chad encouraged therapists to have their clients contact Dakota Care, discuss their particular plan and inquire if services are covered. Mary Guth asked that we receive a better understanding of adjustment disorders which are currently not covered by Dakota Care. Chad will look into this further. He also suggested that we write a letter requesting further information. Ann Marie suggested that a group of providers give a presentation regarding adjustment disorders.
Practice Law *
Mary Guth explained that LMFTs are under the statutes of Counseling and that we do not have to present our own practice law.
Newsletter
This remains a work in progress. Ann Marie has several articles that she will give to Larry Porter to put on the website.
Strategic Planning
There was discussion about participating in a two-day retreat to address the following four goals.
All agreed that we need to continue to work on these goals. This will be addressed further toward fall.
Budget
Mary Guth suggested that we work on developing a budget to include items such as the conference, leadership in Washington, DC, legislative issues, etc. A committee will be developed.

* Subsequent to the June meeting President Mary Guth provided the following statement from the South Dakota Board of Examiners for Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists’ legal counsel, Jim Carlon:
“Passage of Legislation requiring licensure to engage in the practice of professional counseling effectively prohibits the practice of marriage and family therapy without a license. The Legislator used a broad definition for professional counseling. The broad definition of professional counseling includes all practice of family and marriage therapy. As a result, marriage and family therapy is a form of professional counseling requiring licensure. Please keep in mind the exemptions to licensing contained in SDCL 36-32-12 would still apply.”
