History of South Dakota Association for Marriage and Family Therapy

1991  first attempts to organize
1992  South Dakota became a charter chapter of the Upper Midwest division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy
1994 first attempt to pass legislation of licensure of MFTs was defeated
1995 

collaborative efforts with the Committee on Proposed Solutions began

Legislature passes HB 1060 licensing MFTs

rules and regulations for licensing were set

grandparenting applications were offered through December 1995
SDAMFT advisory board to the SD Board of Counselor Examiners was established
marriage and family therapy became a licensed profession in South Dakota
1996 publication of first SDAMFT newsletter
first independently sponsored SDAMFT Conference

SDAMFT membership = 41

AAMFT granted approval for FAST TRACK clinical membership to SD LMFTs

1997 second independently sponsored SDAMFT Conference
first marriage and family therapy licensing exam was offered in SD
AAMFT membership = 71
third independently sponsored SDAMFT Conference
1998 fourth annual conference
1999 fifth annual conference
attempted to amend vendorship law to include LMFTs — HB 1157 passed in the House, was tabled in Senate committee, and died
2000 sixth annual conference
2001 SDAMFT web site is developed
seventh annual conference
2002 COPS is renamed the SD Mental Health Coalition
eighth annual conference
2003 HB 1087 is passed giving LMFTs permission to become endorsed as QMHPs
AAMFT membership = 68
2007 with involvement of AAMFT, Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Iowa and South Dakota recognizes LMFTs as providers
LMFTs recognized as providers with DAKOTACARE
Legislative session — SDAMFT supports Licensed Professional Counselors in obtaining a practice law
